Fox News Will Air One-Hour Special Sunday on Kermit Gosnell

Fox News will air a one-hour special on abortion practitioner Kermit Gosnell and his murder charges Sunday May 5 at 9 p.m. ET.

Father Frank Pavone, the director of Priests for Life, announced the special to LifeNews in an email this morning and encouraged pro-life advocates to tune in and to let others know about it.

“Please spread the word starting now,” he said. “Let’s do all we can to spread the word about this so as to get as many people as possible to watch, and to show our friends in the secular media that when this topic is addressed, people tune in.”

Tony Perkins, the head of the Family Research Council, chimed in on the Gosnell murder trial and said it is an opportunity for the pro-life movement to expose abortion.

“The Kermit Gosnell trial continues to be the single greatest pro-life ad out there, as more Americans are jarred into thinking about the grisly realities behind “choice,’” he says.

Perkins says the Gosnell-President Obama-Planned Parenthood connection is one pro-life advocates must expose.

“While the President refused to comment on the savagery of Kermit Gosnell, his appearance at Planned Parenthood’s fundraiser says plenty. For President Obama, the return to “normalcy” after last week’s tragedies means promoting the industry that gave rise to the “human butcher,’” he said. “A day after Gosnell’s attorney “fell ill” (probably sick at the thought of defending the man), President Obama confirmed his defense of an organization that stands behind Gosnell’s sadistic techniques.”

“In a move that their PR team must have questioned, the First Couple will join a special Thursday gala to toast an organization that fights for the “choice” of killing babies born alive,” Perkins added. “Three weeks ago, while witnesses in the Gosnell trial were tearfully remembering their boss’s instructions to “slit the throat” of a newborn 20 minutes old, Planned Parenthood was 830 miles away trying to stop doctors from saving babies just like her. The abortion giant’s own lobbyist looked Florida legislators in the eye and insisted that medical care is for wanted babies–not accidental survivors of a botched abortion.”

“On that issue, Planned Parenthood and Barack Obama stand alone. Not a single Florida state representative could bring themselves to do once what Barack Obama did four times–vote against life-saving treatments for living, breathing infants,” he said.

He concluded: “The leader of the free world will put his presidential seal of approval on an organization whose icy indifference extends to far more than tiny children. Turns out, the back-alley squalor of Gosnell’s clinic isn’t all that uncommon.”

Fetal Exposure to Excessive Stress Hormones in the Womb Linked to Adult Mood Disorders

Apr. 6, 2013 — Exposure of the developing fetus to excessive levels of stress hormones in the womb can cause mood disorders in later life and now, for the first time, researchers have found a mechanism that may underpin this process, according to research presented April 7 at the British Neuroscience Association Festival of Neuroscience (BNA2013) in London.

The concept of fetal programming of adult disease, whereby the environment experienced in the womb can have profound long-lasting consequences on health and risk of disease in later life, is well known; however, the process that drives this is unclear. Professor Megan Holmes, a neuroendocrinologist from the University of Edinburgh/British Heart Foundation Centre for Cardiovascular Science in Scotland (UK), will say: "During our research we have identified the enzyme 11ß-HSD2 which we believe plays a key role in the process of fetal programming."
Adverse environments experienced while in the womb, such as in cases of stress, bereavement or abuse, will increase levels of glucocorticoids in the mother, which may harm the growing baby. Glucocorticoids are naturally produced hormones and they are also known as stress hormones because of their role in the stress response.
"The stress hormone cortisol may be a key factor in programming the fetus, baby or child to be at risk of disease in later life. Cortisol causes reduced growth and modifies the timing of tissue development as well as having long lasting effects on gene expression," she will say.
Prof Holmes will describe how her research has identified an enzyme called 11ß-HSD2 (11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2) that breaks down the stress hormone cortisol to an inactive form, before it can cause any harm to the developing fetus. The enzyme 11ß-HSD2 is present in the placenta and the developing fetal brain where it is thought to act as a shield to protect against the harmful actions of cortisol.
Prof Holmes and her colleagues developed genetically modified mice that lacked 11ß-HSD2 in order to determine the role of the enzyme in the placenta and fetal brain. "In mice lacking the enzyme 11ß-HSD2, fetuses were exposed to high levels of stress hormones and, as a consequence, these mice exhibited reduced fetal growth and went on to show programmed mood disorders in later life. We also found that the placentas from these mice were smaller and did not transport nutrients efficiently across to the developing fetus. This too could contribute to the harmful consequences of increased stress hormone exposure on the fetus and suggests that the placental 11ß-HSD2 shield is the most important barrier.
"However, preliminary new data show that with the loss of the 11ß-HSD2 protective barrier solely in the brain, programming of the developing fetus still occurs, and, therefore, this raises questions about how dominant a role is played by the placental 11ß-HSD2 barrier. This research is currently ongoing and we cannot draw any firm conclusions yet.
"Determining the exact molecular and cellular mechanisms that drive fetal programming will help us identify potential therapeutic targets that can be used to reverse the deleterious consequences on mood disorders. In the future, we hope to explore the potential of these targets in studies in humans," she will say.
Prof Holmes hopes that her research will make healthcare workers more aware of the fact that children exposed to an adverse environment, be it abuse, malnutrition, or bereavement, are at an increased risk of mood disorders in later life and the children should be carefully monitored and supported to prevent this from happening.
In addition, the potential effects of excessive levels of stress hormones on the developing fetus are also of relevance to individuals involved in antenatal care. Within the past 20 years, the majority of women at risk of premature delivery have been given synthetic glucocorticoids to accelerate fetal lung development to allow the premature babies to survive early birth.
"While this glucocorticoid treatment is essential, the dose, number of treatments and the drug used, have to be carefully monitored to ensure that the minimum effective therapy is used, as it may set the stage for effects later in the child's life," Prof Holmes will say.
Puberty is another sensitive time of development and stress experienced at this time can also be involved in programming adult mood disorders. Prof Holmes and her colleagues have found evidence from imaging studies in rats that stress in early teenage years could affect mood and emotional behaviour via changes in the brain's neural networks associated with emotional processing.
The researchers used fMRI (Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging) to see which pathways in the brain were affected when stressed, peripubertal rats responded to a specific learned task. [1].
Prof Holmes will say: "We showed that in stressed 'teenage' rats, the part of the brain region involved in emotion and fear (known as amygdala) was activated in an exaggerated fashion when compared to controls. The results from this study clearly showed that altered emotional processing occurs in the amygdala in response to stress during this crucial period of development."

Dear Stuart,
When someone tries to say they are not pro-abortion, but pro-choice, I am quick to correct them and point out exactly what “choice” they are advocating for. So last month when I had the opportunity to view the pro-abortion perspective from within, I jumped at the chance.
The weekend of March 25, I went with fellow SFLA staffer Beth O’Malley and Lauren (a pro-life student from Virginia) to the 2013 National Young Feminists Leadership Conference to do some undercover research. It was truly sad to see a feminist movement brought so far down from what its founders like Alice Paul and Susan B. Anthony stood for. The suffragettes were fighting for true human equality, not for the right to have sex with whomever they wanted with no consequences, paid for by the government. They fought for the women’s right to vote, not free birth control and unrestricted abortion. In fact, Alice Paul once said, “Abortion is the ultimate exploitation of women.”
One of the most shocking parts of the conference for me was the session entitled “This Clinic Stays Open: Extremist Threats Facing Clinics & Providers.” Sarah Shanks (Director of Abortion Access Fund, Inc. and Public Relations Coordinator for Dr. Leroy Carhart) praised the late-term abortionist Dr. Carhart for the “marvelous” care he gives to women. She sat at this conference singing praises to Dr. Carhart’s name and saying what a “caring” guy he was! She added as an afterthought that very sadly one of his patients had died a month earlier but that it was totally unrelated to the abortion.
Operation Rescue was able to obtain the death certificate, which stated otherwise. After her 33 week-old preborn baby Madison Leigh was killed by Dr. Carhart, 29 year-old Jennifer Morbelli was killed by “Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation … due to or as a consequence of Amniotic Fluid Embolism following Medical Termination of Pregnancy.” How can people say Carhart is a “caring” man when this “caring” man was nowhere to be found when Jennifer and her family tried to call him the morning she died? Would a “caring” man fail to respond to the hospital that admitted Jennifer when they were trying to get in touch with him?
Dr. Carhart’s actions bring to mind Susan B. Anthony’s words about abortion: “thrice guilty is he who, for selfish gratification, heedless of her prayers, indifferent to her fate, drove her to the desperation which impelled her to the crime." Dr. Carhart preys on desperate women for his own selfish profit, then leaves them (he literally leaves the state), indifferent to their fates.

There was also a part during the main session when they talked about the Radiance Foundation’s billboards (shout-out to Ryan Bomberger!) and everyone said, “Ewww!” at the thought of a man kissing a pregnant woman’s stomach.
Attending this conference has had me thinking about how we can improve as pro-lifers and what, if anything, we need to work on. Though, to be quite truthful, most of what the other side says we do is pure lies or gross over-exaggerations.
So, what can we work on as pro-lifers to continue to grow and not give those who are pro-abortion reason to smear us (though I am sure they will always find some way to do so)? Well, we can properly train on sidewalk counseling, for one. During the session I attended I watched as they did a practice session on ‘How to be an escort for a women’s clinic’ - or as my former mentor Kortney would phrase it ‘How to be a deathscort for an abortion mill’ (watch video here).
I learned from this session that there are still some pro-lifers who don’t know how to sidewalk counsel and fail to take turns in letting one person talk at a time so as not to sound like an angry mob. Thankfully, I know that most sidewalk counselors don’t yell things such as “Baby murderer!” anymore, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t strive to constantly work on ways to improve our outreach to the women walking into these abortion mills.
I have been traveling across my region training students all over with new tactics to reach the women and men walking into these abortion mills. As the pro-life generation, we should be preparing and arming ourselves with all the tools needed to effectively reach out to these women. In February, University of Richmond Spiders for Life put the techniques I had taught them to use the weekend after my training and were thrilled to have their first baby save!
Students for Life of America has designated Saturday, April 20th, as the first National Abortion Facility Action Day. Get out there with your group to pray or sidewalk counsel outside your local abortion facility!
Are you looking to get trained or bring someone in to train a group of people on abortion mill outreach? I would love to come in and talk to your group about some new effective ways to sidewalk counsel. If you’re interested in setting that up, you can email me at smaher@studentsforlife.org. Let’s make sure that we’re reaching these women and men in the most effective way possible!

FCC set to drop ban on f-word, nudity on television and radio stations nationwide

They are seeking public comments; make your voice count!
April 8, 2013

Dear Marianne,
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced it is considering dropping current broadcast decency standards that ban explicit profanity and "non-sexual" nudity.
You can read the press release from the FCC here.
Specifically, if enacted, the new FCC policy would allow network television and local radio stations to air the f-word, the s-word and to allow programs to show frontal female nudity, even during hours when they know children will be watching and listening.
It is accepting comments on the proposal from the viewing public until the end of April.
Current broadcast decency law prohibits expletives and nudity, even if brief or "fleeting." The Supreme Court has upheld the law as constitutionally enforceable by the FCC, despite lawsuit attempts by networks NBC and FOX to overturn it.
TAKE ACTION
Submit your comments to the FCC, urging it to reject any changes to the current policy.
The FCC will not accept general email comments. To be valid, you are required to file a formal comment via the FCC's website.
Please follow these instruction carefully, to insure your comment is accepted by the FCC:
1. Go to http://apps.fcc.gov/ecfs/upload/begin?procName=&filedFrom=X.
2. Enter the code "13-86" in the "Proceeding Number" box and fill out the few remaining required fields.
3. Enter your comment in the text box provided and click "Continue."
4. From there, review your comment and click "Confirm."

Here is a sample comment you may submit:
I oppose any changes to the current FCC indecency standards that would allow television and radio stations to broadcast expletives and nudity on the public airwaves, even if brief or "fleeting."
The Supreme Court has confirmed the FCC&'s authority to enforce policies regarding expletives and nudity, especially during times when children are likely to be watching or listening.
Relaxing the current policy would not serve the public interest and I urge the FCC to reject all proposals that would allow for the broadcast of expletives and nudity on FCC-licensed stations.

Fwd: Apr 4. 2013: News (Students for Life of America) – “are pro-life students white supremacists?”

From: Kristan Hawkins [mailto:kristan@studentsforlife.org]
Sent: Thursday, April 04, 2013 1:37 PM

Subject: are pro-life students white supremacists??

Dear Stuart,
There's no way to sugarcoat this:

The Culture of Death is on the move in our nation. Every day, as we go about our daily lives – working, taking our kids to baseball practice, heading to church, and meeting with friends – it's there. It's there as mothers and fathers are deceived into believing that abortion is their only option, and it's there as bodies of preborn baby girls and boys are thrown in the trash.

By now, I'm sure you have heard the latest from Planned Parenthood in Florida. One of their officials testified in front of the Florida legislature that a baby boy or girl born alive during an abortion should be allowed to be killed, saying it "should be left up to the woman, her family, and the physician."

And you may have heard about the Kermit Gosnell trial going on this week in Philadelphia. He's the multi-millionaire abortionist who, along with his wife and staff, was arrested for doing illegal late-term abortions and killing a woman during an abortion as well as babies that had been born alive. In the process of raiding his abortion facility, police found what has been described as a sickening "house of horrors" – blood on medical instruments and beds and an ordinary kitchen sink garage disposal which he and his staff were using to grind up parts of the babies they killed.  He kept his abortion business unsanitary and unsafe – he lacked even basic items like crash carts for medical emergencies.
Not surprisingly, the mainstream media has failed to report on this gruesome case – but because of the trial this week, the world has now seen the photos of the feet Gosnell cut off of full-term babies he had aborted and kept in jars in his office.  Photos of babies Gosnell aborted – babies he joked were "big enough to walk to the bus stop" – by partial-birth abortion have been entered into evidence and exposed.
These are the ghastly results of the Culture of Death in America, and I'm sad to say that this culture is pervasive on college campuses, fostering hatred and suspicion of pro-life students.
Last week, Students for Life broke an important story at one of our nation's premier universities, Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. You see, the new pro-life group we are helping to start at the school, Voice for Life, was denied official university club status just before Easter because one of the activities the group plans on engaging in is off campus sidewalk counseling. Despite the peaceful nature of sidewalk counseling, which has saved thousands of babies from abortion and countless women and men from pain, the officers of the JHU Student Government Association (SGA) deemed that sidewalk counseling violates the school's harassment policies.
And on top of that, a private email between the SGA officers surfaced that showed the SGA's extreme bias against pro-lifers. One student wrote that she felt that Voice for Life's message amounts to "hate speech" that would "violate" and "attack" women. She also said that it would force students to "defend their beliefs on their way to class," something she thought was unfair, citing a "right to protect our students from things that are uncomfortable." So much for the free expression of ideas and academic inquiry, which our universities purport to advance!
But another student took the cake in this e-mail chain when he wrote to the other SGA officers comparing Voice for Life to a white supremacist hate group!  These are the kinds of vicious attacks our students face every day on campuses across the country.  Their peers, and even professors and administrators, attempt to silence them by denying their right to speak out and hatefully slandering their character by calling them racists and bigots.

Now, our students are appealing the SGA's biased decision, and we've got national media attention putting pressure on the school to do the right thing and uphold their free speech. We will know in the next week whether or not freedom of speech and association prevails at Johns Hopkins, which ironically has the motto "The truth will set you free." We must ensure our students are able to peacefully spread the pro-life message without being intimidated.

Whether it's the murder of infants and their mothers, or the biased denial of speech that exposes the truth, the Culture of Death will stop at nothing to get its way.

It truly is spiritual warfare.

And I'm sorry to say that things are going to get worse because the Culture of Death is getting desperate.

Why?
Because we are winning.
Every gruesome story like the Gosnell case and the Florida Planned Parenthood official admitting support for infanticide proves their true agenda. Every case of shouting down and intimidating voices for life exposes them for what they truly are.
This generation knows the truth. Facts and science are on our side, and America is beginning to wake up from its 40 year slumber - of its 40 years of sweeping abortion under the rug.

Stuart, I have a very special announcement to share with you next week about Students for Life's newest plan to expose Planned Parenthood and the Culture of Death. I'm bursting at the seams trying to keep this special project a secret, I want to share it with you so badly!

But I just had to write you today to make sure you knew all that is going on, and to ask you to pray for our student leaders across the nation this week, especially the young students at Johns Hopkins as they prepare for their student hearing this coming Tuesday, which we fear is going to be stacked against them.

And today, as you go about your life – driving back from work, heading to Bible study, or taking the kids to practice – think about how you can get further involved in fighting the Culture of Death. Whether that's praying daily for our mission at Students for Life, donating to us to help carry out your passion, or getting involved right in your community with the pro-life movement.

Please keep SFLA in your prayers this week and consider pitching in $15, $25, or $50 as we help the courageous students at Johns Hopkins fight back and train and equip thousands of young people to take the Culture of Death head on at over 705 college campuses across the nation.

Time is running out for this school year, and our team is scattered right now. This week, we are in Arkansas, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Missouri, Oregon, Washington, Virgina, Maryland, and California.  Please help ensure we have the resources we need to take the buses, trains, and airplanes to each group of pro-life students who are courageously standing for Life and need our help before the school year comes to a close by pitching in what you can.

Thank you for your dedication. It's an honor to stand alongside you in this fight. With your help, we WILL defeat the Culture of Death.

For Life,

Dear President Daniels,

I sincerely urge you to approve support for the student organization Voice for Life on the campus of Johns Hopkins University.  Of all states, Maryland, founded by Catholics, should know the importance of freedom of speech and religious liberty.  These young people exemplify by their activism and good works the kind of citizenship participation which every American university so promote.  They speak on behalf of people who have no voice do solely to their place of residence (their mothers’ wombs).  Life the fundamental right of every human being.  Every unborn child has a unique DNA which bestows on him or her such rights.

Their parents made their choice at conception; innocent children should not be victimized by immoral or hedonistic parentage.

Brothers and Sisters, it is a great joy for me to be back here at St. Thomas Aquinas parish! Your pastor, Fr. Luke, has asked me to come and speak to you this Sunday about some difficulties that you may be having in answering for some of the politically incorrect teachings of the Church – particularly the teachings on contraception and gay marriage.  There is no doubt that you are being called upon in your places of work to answer for these teachings in various ways, and it is often demanded that you give reasons for these teachings that do not make appeal to the bible or divine revelation. Furthermore, there is an atmosphere around us that tells you that you are not allowed to assert your beliefs or views about these matters in the public square. The message given to you – whether spoken or unspoken – is that these teachings are specifically religious, and based on the bible, tradition, or divine revelation, and that therefore you have no right to assert them in the public square or to expect others to form public policy on the basis of these teachings. The atmosphere around is designed to intimidate, marginalize, stigmatize, and silence you. I am here this weekend to tell you that there is no reason to be afraid or intimidated in any way whatsoever by the world around you, that there are very good reasons to assert in public that contraception is intrinsically evil and so too is any notion of “gay marriage. ” The reasons I have in mind are to be found not in the bible or in divine revelation but in shared human experience, common sense, and critical reflection. Where shall we begin?
Let us begin by remembering a very important point. There is a higher law, and all human beings have the capacity to know the higher law.  Higher than the laws formed by human beings, higher than the civil codes passed by human legislators or rulers, there are higher laws that rulers and leaders themselves are subject to and beholden to. There is a higher law, and all human beings – including political leaders – have the capacity to know it. Fortunately, our American tradition has many examples of people who appeal to the higher law, and have made a difference for the better in the world by doing so.
Consider first the Declaration of Independence. I encourage you to go back and read again that beautiful document. The founders begin by asserting that there is a higher law – that all human beings are endowed by their Creator with the rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. They go on to argue that when kings and rulers violate those higher laws, the people have the right and indeed should throw off the governance of such abusive political leadership. The Declaration then enumerates a list of abuses and usurpations committed by the Kings of England, and concludes that the Americans are now removing themselves from the jurisdiction of the King. America is founded, therefore, on the proposition that there is a higher law, and that all human beings have the capacity to know that law.
A more recent example is to be found in the Nuremburg trials. At the end of the Second World War, the allies were able to capture some of the remaining Nazi leadership, put them on trial, and charge them with crimes against humanity. What was their defense? The Nazis defended themselves by arguing that what they did was in accord with the law of their land, and that they were just following orders. What was the reply? You knew better. There is a higher law, and all human beings have the capacity to know that law. You knew that it was wrong to put people in gas ovens. Therefore, the Nazis were found guilty of crimes against humanity, and punished accordingly.
A more recent example still comes from Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement of the sixties. When Martin Luther King Jr. went into the public square to put an end to segregation in the United States, he made many arguments based not on the bible or on divine revelation. He did not claim that all Christians should see the problem with segregation, but that all human beings whether Christian or not, whether they have any faith or not, should see the injustice of segregation. Let us listen to an excerpt from his marvelous Letter from a Birmingham Jail. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote:
“Now, what is the difference between the two [a just law and an unjust law]? How does one determine whether a law is just or unjust? A just law is a man-made code that squares with the moral law or the law of God. An unjust law is a code that is out of harmony with the moral law. To put it in the terms of St. Thomas Aquinas: An unjust law is a human law that is not rooted in eternal law and natural law. Any law that uplifts human personality is just. Any law that degrades human personality is unjust. All segregation statutes are unjust because segregation distorts the soul and damages the personality.”
What distorts the soul and damages the personality is unjust. These are powerful truths. What distorts the soul and damages the personality is unjust.
Brothers and Sisters, when the Church teaches that contraception is intrinsically evil and that it is not possible to support gay marriage, you and I are not limited to arguing for these claims on the basis of the bible or divine revelation. The truth is that contraception distorts the soul and damages the personality. And so too would gay marriage also distort the soul and damage the personality in various ways. And there are many reasons to show that this is so, and these reasons are taken not from the bible or divine revelation, but from shared human experience, common sense, and rational reflection.
Let us consider first the issue of contraception. Why is contraception intrinsically evil? Let us think about it. Contraception works just often enough to generate the illusion that one is safe from either disease or pregnancy, but it fails often enough that now 1/4 women in the US has HPV (a sexually transmitted disease) and 1/5 women over the age of 14 has had an abortion. Contraception reduces sex to a recreational activity, transforms women into a mere object for the indulgence of men’s sexual pleasure, and it leaves women vulnerable to every form of blame, hostility, and pressure to have an abortion when the contraception fails. Contraception panders to and expands the lusts of men, it neutralizes men’s will to commitment in marriage, and diminishes their sense of responsibility for the children they beget. Contraception is very deeply emasculating.  Hence, the phenomenon of the men who are middle aged teenagers and grown up wimps. Contraception enslaves men and women to a pattern of instant gratification. Contraception makes marital infidelity – adultery – very easy, and makes pregnancy seem like a disease. Hence, the erroneous perception has spread in our society that contraception is health care. That is not true. Although the pill in particular can sometimes licitly be used for purposes of regulating a women’s cycle, contraception as contraception is not health care. It cures nothing. Fertility is not a disease, pregnancy is not a problem. Pregnancy is always and essentially a blessing – even in difficult circumstances. These are but a few reasons for saying that contraception distorts the soul and damages the personality. There are many more reasons for saying so. One day, I sat down and was able to come up with a list of twenty six negative social consequences of contraception. They form a set of reasons – reasons taken not from the bible but from shared human experience, common sense, and rational reflection – to say that contraception is evil.[1]
Are you aware that among couples who live their marriages according to the teachings of the Church, and remain open to life in each and every marital act, the rate of divorce is less than 5%? What would family life in America be like if everyone lived their marriages that way?
Let us now consider the issue of gay marriage. Before I begin, it is important for us first to distinguish between merely having same sex attraction and the free choice to act on same sex attraction. The Church does not teach that same sex attraction is sinful in itself, but only that the choice to act upon such desires is sinful. The desires are one thing, the activity is another. There are many people who have same sex attraction, and lead a chaste and holy life. The Church does not condemn people who have same sex attraction. I myself know people with such an attraction. They come to me, and we talk. I care deeply for them, and so please do not misinterpret my words as any sort of condemnation of any class of human beings. What I am speaking of here is specifically the controversial question of gay marriage.
It may seem to many of you that there is no controversy left. That all enlightened, sophisticated, well educated, and sane human beings now accept the reality and goodness of gay marriage. This is part of the atmosphere of intimidation now at work in our society, and there is a sustained attempt to marginalize, stigmatize and silence you. But there is no need to be afraid or intimidated in any way whatsoever. The truth is that there are many intelligent, sophisticated, and well educated people who have good reasons to think that gay marriage would distort the soul and damage the personality – especially of the children involved.
The first point to be made is that gay marriage is in fact not possible. It belongs to the very essence of marriage that it be between a male and a female and ordered per se towards procreation. Same sex relationships are not of that nature, and one cannot make them to be of that nature just by applying the word “marriage” to them – any more than one can make a flower to be a bird by calling the flower by the name “bird.” Nonetheless, because of current usages, I will use the oxymoron “gay marriage.”
On January 13 of this year, in Paris, there was a demonstration of over 400,000 people who turned out to protest a recent law in France that would institutionalize gay marriage. What was most interesting about this protest was that many of the protesters were not Catholics or Christians or even believers. There were atheists, agnostics, secularists, and homosexuals present as well. All of them were opposed to gay marriage.
The famous psychoanalyst in France Claude Halmos, one of the leading recognized experts in child psychology, has declared herself to be against homosexual marriage. Also, Italian psychoanalyst Silvia Vegetti Finzi also took a stance against the adoption of children by same-sex couples. Secularistic Philosopher Sylviane Agacinski has done the same. According to Agacinski, gay marriage would give “a pretense of desexualized conception that is not realistic,” but would “risk imposing the right of obscuring the other sex in the conception of these children and of preventing them from having access to their own real origin.” Here are experts who have grave doubts about gay marriage, and that should give one pause.[2]
But one need not be an expert to grasp the reasons for opposing gay marriage. All that is required is common sense and a little reflection. Consider for example a girl raised by two men. The little girl would have no woman in the home to model both femininity and motherhood, and the girl would also lack a living model of love between husband and wife, male and female. So, the daughter would lack something needed for normal healthy development.  To have such role models is one of the critical needs of personal development, and so gay marriage would deprive her of these needs. The same would go for a son raised by two women. We have reasons to say, therefore, that gay marriage would distort the soul and damage the personality. But there are other reasons.
Gay marriage would institutionalize the lie that homosexual activity is morally permissible. Gay marriage would distort the minds of the young in perceiving the meaning and significance of sexual complementarity between male and female. Gay marriage would intentionally deny children the right to a father or a mother. Let us think about that one. It should be common sense that all children have the right to both a mother and a father, and that no one should intentionally deny a child of either a father or a mother unless the common good absolutely required it – such as in the case of a military draft. But gay marriage would deny children of either a father or a mother. Gay marriage would also totally separate the process of having children from the marital act, and increase the occurrence of other intrinsic evils such as gamete donation, in vitro fertilization, and surrogate motherhood. For these and other reasons drawn from shared experience, common sense, and rational reflection, we can say that gay marriage would distort the soul and damage the personality. Consequently, any attempted institutionalization of gay marriage would be intrinsically evil, totally unjust, and we cannot support it.
At this point many people are probably asking why, if there are such good reasons against contraception and gay marriage, more people don’t see it. If the reasons are so good, then why doesn’t everyone see them?
That is a very good question, and reveals a certain mystery about human beings. As I said earlier, there is a higher law, and all human beings have the capacity to know it. But as you know from your own experience in life, human beings often fail to live up to their full capacities. Many people are ignorant of certain moral truths. Sometimes, the ignorance is inculpable. The person is not blameworthy. Over the last several decades in this country, there has been a systematic movement that has used the educational institutions, the media, and music-entertainment industries to propagate in very powerful and persuasive ways many distortions and lies about the human person and human sexuality. Many young people have now been raised on these distortions, and it is very hard to say whether they are blameworthy for going along. May the young people learn to rise above the crowd, to call upon the Spirit of truth, and to call into question the accounts of life, love, and sexuality that have been transmitted to them through the culture! But there are some people who know well what the higher law is on these matters, and they deliberately and intentionally reject the truth. We must pray a lot for such souls, for grace to transform them, and save them.
Brothers and Sisters, please do not be discouraged by the ocean of ignorance around us in our society! Jesus too was once surrounded by the darkness of ignorance and fury. And there came a point in his life too when it seemed that the darkness had triumphed. But we know how the story ended. Jesus is the light of the world. “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (Jn. 1:5).
Do not be afraid to bear witness to the truth. You have good reasons to go into the public square and assert the truth. You do not need anyone’s permission to speak your mind. You do not need anyone’s authorization to say what you think. There is no need to be intimidated. The Holy Spirit is with you. He is calling you to bear witness to the truth.
It is a beautiful thing to bear witness to the truth. It is a beautiful thing to bear witness to the truth even when it seems useless. It is a beautiful thing to bear witness to the truth even when people walk away. It is a beautiful thing to bear witness in time to the truth that is eternal. The time has come to bear witness. Let us begin.
